Patternmakers (also known as casting makers) is the making of a replica of the object to be a cast, they used to prepare the cavity into which molten material is poured during the casting process. Patterns that are used in sand casting may be made of wood, metal, plastic or many other materials. Patterns are made to exacting standards of construction, they are made this way so that they can last for a reasonable length of time, according to the quality and the grade of the pattern being built, this is so that they will repeatable provide a dimensionally acceptable casting. Under some of the circumstances an original item may be adapted to be used as a pattern.
